Peter gets carried away when the Nielsen people select the Griffins to have their television-viewing habits monitored and he steals a number of the Nielsen boxes in hopes of controlling the airwaves.

After a visit to the fire station during open house, the Griffins return home to find an offer to become a Nielsen Family. When Tom Tucker comes to Peter to find ways to increase his ratings, Peter makes some unconventional suggestions which Tom follows. While Quagmire and Joe are shocked, Peter is amused and decides to follow it up with other odd suggestions. But when Peter tries to expand his ideas he is shut down for lack of clout until he has the opportunity to steal hundreds of Nielsen boxes and can more strongly influence television.

His plan backfires when television becomes ruined and no one else wants to watch, turning on Peter and making him a pariah. When even his friends turn their backs on him, Peter starts to try to use his Nielsen powers to set things right but the boxes are destroyed by Mayor West. Desperate, Peter turns to the Television Producers Guild to help create new shows like the old ones Peter ruined. With television restored, Peter makes up with his friends as Herbert sits amount the piles of repaired Nielsen boxes and suggests Zack and Cody of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody appear in their underwear.
